Chapter Thirteen

LATER THAT NIGHT, Karna waited until Dmitri had gone to the lavatory before she slipped out to seek Pan Adi. She found him walking meditatively through a courtyard surrounded by plants, ferns, and other types of bushes she didn’t recognize. The courtyard was in an atrium with a conservatory glass dome on a ceiling that stretched to the skies in an elongated point at the tip.

Pan Adi was wearing long, dark, flowing robes and a golden rope used as a belt that was tied tightly around his waist. He had one hand behind his back and was strolling with a tranquil look on his face. He used his other hand to hold a wooden cane that made an echo every time it hit the surface of the concrete walkway.

Did he already have enough skills and training to know that Karna had tucked herself behind a tall plant and was observing him? If so, was he just pretending not to be aware of her intense gaze on him?

His back was slightly hunched, and he was still feeble looking, yet there was something about the way he moved that suggested he’d been very nimble in his youth.

“Come here, girl,” he said in an amused tone. He didn’t turn around to look at Karna.

Karna glanced behind her, half expecting some other girl to emerge from the shadows and reveal herself. It was only a few seconds later that she realized Pan Adi must certainly be talking to her. Maybe he could teach her how to sense someone’s presence like that.

She carefully emerged from her hiding spot behind the plant. She took guarded steps in his direction.

“Here I am,” she said.

Pan Adi’s lips curled into a grin. “I believe you have some questions for me.”

“I actually do have some,” she said sheepishly.

He halted his stride and sat at the edge of a stone seat in the center of the atrium. He placed his hands calmly on his knees and finally met her gaze. “Let’s hear them then.”

Karna swallowed hard and took another cautious step in his direction. “What is this place?”

Pan Adi inhaled deeply. “We are in my headquarters, attached to the Mysetter Specialized Schools, including the school for assassins.”

Karna gulped. “We are?” She instinctively glanced around. It looked nothing like her old school. “Why can’t I see any students on the grounds outside my window? Or in here?”

Pan Adi let out a sound that resembled a chuckle and then coughed. “Studies don’t take place in this area.”

“Oh.” Karna frowned and continued to curiously peer at Pan Adi, patiently waiting for him to elaborate with more information.

Her heart pounded. Were there assassin students learning how to use weapons and do hand-to-hand combat nearby, just as she’d always wanted to learn? The prospect sent an exhilarating thrill up her spine.

“Why did you bring us here?” Karna asked, meaning her and Dmitri.

“Perhaps it’s better if you know where this all started, and how it can somewhat be traced back to your family,” Pan Adi began.

Karna nodded, intrigued by the mention of her family.
